Elly Jackson of La Roux stole my look.

Dear Elly Jackson,

I first heard ‘Bulletproof‘ at the gym a couple of weeks ago, and while I was completely taken by its delicious electropop sound, I fostered a slight premature resentment for its artist as I imagined that in the video, she would be some blonde, half-naked babe gyrating her hips in a dark club. Later that day, I watched the video for “In For The Kill” – oblivious to the fact that this was the very same artiste, and developed a HUGE girl crush on the singer.  HUGE. Like “come over to Australia and join me in bed right now” HUGE.

Obviously, you can imagine my extreme delight when I found out that Ms In For The Kill was also Ms Bulletproof. I was (and still am) in love – your bizarre beauty, amazing hair, incredible make-up and styling and just your whole damn video is one huge bowl of hotness which I can’t stop lusting over. However, I am slightly disappointed that you did not contact me to ask about borrowing my “look”. Of course I am terribly flattered to be a part of this showcase of sexy-robotique-androgynous-loveliness but really, it was mine. I would have said yes anyway!

Luckily for you, I will not be contacting my lawyers this time. I most graciously forgive you because your love does crazy things to me.

50 Tried-and-Tested Date Ideas

2009 December 5
by Ekerplay

me and my sweetie

My boyfriend and I wholeheartedly agree that going to the movies is the worst possible first date. Nevermind the “who pays” dilemma which this scenario only exacerbates, you can’t make conversation, the greasy popcorn makes hand-holding nauseating, and if the movie is rubbish, one of you is going to be extremely embarrassed for picking it!

I’ve only been on two movie dates with my boyfriend, and while they were both pretty good, interactive dates are miles ahead on my love list! So, here is a mega-list of things to do on a date, pulled from my own dating archive!! Warning: a few of them involve greasy food – but i’m sure you’ll find a way to work it off ;D

  1. Play one-on-one sports! My boyfriend loves soccer, and when we were “just friends” playing soccer was one of the first things we did together. Don’t worry if you’re not any good, it makes you look more adorable – trust me :P ! On the other hand, if you can kick his butt, go for it – but don’t be an asshole about it because you’ll bruise his ego and that is never a good idea !!
  2. Have a game of pool – this is especially good if you’ve always wanted to learn!! It can be pretty nerve-wracking to walk into a pool hall with no knowledge of the game, but with a skilled boy on your arm you’ll finally have the opportunity to play.
  3. Make pizza together.
  4. Play poker!!
  5. Have dinner in you backyard on a picnic rug. If you have a dog, keep him indoors! Don’t forget mosquito repellant, and don’t try this date when its windy or raining. Cold is okay though – just rug up well!
  6. Hunt down an amazing French café that sells real hot chocolate mmmm! Do this the morning after a big night!
  7. Get vegetable dumplings from the best place in town and eat them sitting on a park bench under the stars :)
  8. Make your own vegetable dumplings!! (We did this last night!)
  9. Have piggy-back races at the local swimming pool
  10. Create toga costumes together for a party
  11. Play on the swings at the park
  12. Go to a gaming arcade: race cars or motorbikes, arm wrestle with a broken machine or shoot zombies
  13. Go to a major sporting game (We went to see Australia play Japan earlier this year and it was great!!)
  14. Go to a club that plays music from era’s past (40’s, 50’s 60’s … etc.) – this music is SO much better to dance to with a date!!!
  15. Sit in bed and watch a marathon of your favourite show (we love The Big Bang Theory!!)
  16. Both at school/university?? Have a study session together – it’s more fun than it sounds
  17. Sneak into the VIP areas of hotels and go nuts! My boyfriend and I snuck into the restricted areas at Crown, went swimming in our knickers and horsed around in the rooftop garden before sneaking out past nice security guards who pretended not to see us!
  18. Grab a box of hot chips and eat them by a river at twilight.
  19. Photobooths :D You must kiss in at least one of the photos… or else!
  20. Rent out an apartment for a night and enjoy the privacy!
  21. Go to the beach on a cold, windy day when there is no one around. Wrap yourselves together in one big towel for protection against flying sand.
  22. Watch the sunset together at the end of a pier.
  23. Take your dogs for a walk at the park.
  24. Do a gym class together… my boy kicked my butt at Pilates!!!!!
  25. Sing songs together :)
  26. Grab another couple (or two!) and have a game of Twister!
  27. Monopoly is also fun to play… when you start losing terribly (like me) you can trade kisses for train stations!
  28. Read PostSecret together and share a secret if you are feeling brave!
  29. Go shopping together… but don’t try on a bazillion outfits!! This is not the time to spend 20 minutes looking at your ass in the change rooms… unless of course you can sneak your date in there too!! (Never managed to do this myself however haha!)
  30. Play Nintendo together.
  31. Karaoke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Haven’t done this yet – but I plan to very very soon!)
  32. Go for a jog together – I love this and it makes exercise bearable!
  33. Sit in massage chairs together!!
  34. Or give each other a massage :)
  35. Have dinner in a treehouse
  36. Go bowling.
  37. Walk around the city, check out other hotties and cool shop window displays.
  38. Take a hot bath together with amazing bath bombs from Lush.
  39. Have a game of Minesweeper over IM/MSN – set up your webcam to scope-out your date’s  ‘game-face’
  40. Grab some fresh-made gelato and eat it in the park on a hot day,
  41. Have a couples night and eat a home-cooked meal – bonus if your couple friends can make you proper bruschetta
  42. Show each other your favourite clips on YouTube :)
  43. Bring your date to an otherwise boring family dinner!
  44. Jump over waves at the beach.
  45. Go to a market for crazy food or awesome second-hand books and clothes
  46. Make epic sandwiches together :D
  47. Dart around a room shooting each other with imaginary guns and making “pew pew pew” sound effects :D
  48. Pretend to be strangers, flirt and chat each other up on a bus.
  49. Learn a language together… if his parent’s speak the language, they’ll be super impressed and tell you “prede apyat!” (come over again!).
  50. Kiss and cuddle everywhere and all the time :)

White Canvas Sneakers Seeking Make-Over

2009 November 27
by Ekerplay

Today I came into possession of these amazingly ordinary white canvas shoes… for less than $8 each. I’ve taken home two pairs – i’ll keep one white but the other will soon feel the wrath of my paintbrush!

After a bit of brainstorming, I retrieved a scrap of a memory an image that I loved. A red heart face, slightly wonky, that some fashion label had used on a t-shirt. It also had no mouth yet reminded me of the “Woo Hoo” heart on the Sims 2!!  (…and my geekery is revealed!)

I Googled, Googled and Googled some more before I finally – FINALLY – found the original image on a Comme des Garçons t-shirt!! Hurrah!!

I already have a bottle of red ink, with a label wich claims it to be suitable for fabric, and i’m sure I can pull a black Sharpie from somewhere so i’ll get to work as soon as I find a blank hour in my calender! I’m not decided if I should do a discrete design on each shoe, or if the greater design should span across them both.

What do you think?
